LEONARD MISONNE: The Pictorialist Photographer

You'll see photography exhibits dedicated to his contemporaries like Julia Margaret Cameron and Alfred Stieglitz but, in my personal opinion, Leonard Misonne's photographic work stands out above the rest.

Leonard Misonne was born in Gilly, Belgium in 1870. He was an amateur photographer who earned a degree in mining engineering. Because he was asthmatic he had to change careers so his passion for photography became a full-time endeavor. Misonne experimented with various printing processes in oil, gum-bichromate and mediobrome. The results were dreamy landscapes and urban settings such as the photographs he took in Brussels and London in the 1910s.

Leonard Misonne's photographs are in the public domain.
